What is Resilience to You? Vol. 12, Issue 9

Published 8 months ago • 2 min read

Dear Reader,

Growing up, I often had 2-3 birthday parties each year. I was involved in a variety of worlds that didn’t know that the other ones existed, and my parents, bless them, threw me multiple parties for the varying groups. I still feel that way; that I have very divergent & diverse groups of non-overlapping friends, and I like that. I see some frequently and some infrequently. Some have been friends for 30 years, others for 3 months.

I love celebrating, and even though lots of adults don’t have birthday parties, most years, I still do. But this year, turning 50 in October, I have been having a bit of an existential crisis. Who actually are my friends, and who should I invite? I have a couple of close ones, and I don’t question those. But the work I do puts me in contact with loads of folks, and some quite frequently, and I feel intimately connected with many. But they aren’t typical colleagues, as I am a contractor outside of their organization. I consider them friends, but is that also how they see it?

With much contemplation, I guess that my goal is not necessarily to come up with an answer as to who fits into the friend-checking box. It’s to continue to think about connection. So if you are reading this, please know that I appreciate you greatly and yes, I do think of you as my friend. Whether we see each other once per week or once a year, I am grateful for our connection. Want to come to my party? :)

Best, - Julie

Dear Reader, Many CEOs have shared with me their experiences with imposter syndrome. Apparently, 70% of executive women have felt it. When I first started apprentice-coaching at the FDA, I was told to not feel intimidated by people’s titles, GS levels, education, or experience, and to coach them like they put their pants on one leg at a time, just like the rest of us. Thankfully, I could. Over the years, I have had the chance to share a stage with some leaders with a bit of celebrity status,...

Dear Reader, Proud. Happy. Relieved. That's how I feel now, as my 19-year-old son and I spend an afternoon together at the climbing gym. Katie and I used to come here together to talk a little about work and a lot about life in between the climbs. She passed away 9 months ago now. As I touch the climbing holds that she also touched, my heart is heavy, but also grateful for her. She had a gym membership, and she'd give me her one free monthly guest pass. I remember many-a-conversation...
